New York Folding Box Company lives and breathes paperboard. This thick paper substrate is transformed into an infinite number of designs. Whether it be a simple tuck carton to intricate and sculpted packages that impart a sense of luxury and wonder. With all this versatility, there is no surprise that there are this many grades of paperboard. Each type with different prosperity, strengths, and weaknesses.

SOLID BLEACHED SULFATE (SBS)

A premium grade, brilliant white SBS has a clay-coated surface for high-quality printing and a top ply of bleached virgin hardwood fibers for smoothness. The other plies are made of bleached virgin softwood or a blend of softwood and hardwood fiber. Because it is a solid white sheet, SBS is the preferred choice for food packaging and many high-end retail products. Sectors that regularly use SBS include:

  • Perishable bakery products

  • Cosmetics

  • Frozen or wet foods

  • Dairy products (butter, milk, ice cream, etc.)

  • Meats

  • Medical products

SOLID UNBLEACHED SULPHATE (SUS)

SUS, usually created with softwood pulp, results in good tear resistance and the greatest stiffness and strength in relation to basis weight of the paperboard substrates. SUS allows for the use of a lower caliper paperboard relative to other substrates. It also has cost advantages over bleached virgin paperboard (SBS).

SUS is used in many folding carton applications, especially when strength and durability are essential. Typical uses are consumer electronics packaging, beverage carriers, dry food packaging, hardware packaging, and packaging for powdered detergents and soaps. SUS board generally has better stiffness in comparison to other boards with the same caliper.

COATED UNBLEACHED KRAFT (CUK)

CUK is made from unbleached virgin kraft fiber, whereas SBS is white throughout.  CUK imparts a natural brown color. This board grade is comprised primarily of various southern pine species (softwoods) with some hardwood fiber, particularly in the top ply which is clay-coated to create a smooth, white printing surface. CUK has long, large pine fibers impart excellent strength and tear resistance qualities to the finished sheet. This strength characterizes the CUK grade. It’s most commonly used for beer and soft drink beverage containers as well as heavy-duty retail packaging such as hardware and concentrated laundry detergents.

COATED RECYCLED PAPERBOARD

Often times called, Coated Newsboard, this type of paperboard grade is made of recycled fibers and it contains a top ply of white fibers and is finished with a clay coating to improve print performance. Use this recycled board if you’re designing for the following products:

  • Laundry soaps and detergents

  • Dry bakery products (crackers, cookies)

  • Paper products (facial tissues, napkins)

  • Dry foods

  • Hardware

  • Cake mixes

  • Cereal

CHIPBOARD

Manufactured from corrugated and recycled newsprint. This type of chipboard is 100% recycled and is the most economical solution for companies looking to save on their board. Upping the caliber gives chipboard strength and stiffness, as well as, a higher resistance to tearing. Thus, making it not only an economical solution, but a environmentally friendly solution.
